Timeline
Available Positions are for six months in length with full time hours. Each member committing to 900 hours of service. (925 recommended) This averages to about 35 hours a week. Schedules can be adjusted, depending on the needs of the projects and your team, balanced with your own needs. Most positions will include some, pre-scheduled, evening and weekend activities.
Positions start based on availability and end 6 months from start the date. Members are expected to continue to serve until the end of the agreed service term.
Stipend & Benefits
For the 2022-2023 program year, six month members will receive a living allowance of $8,251 gross for the year, payable in 12 bi-monthly installments. Workers Comp will be provided, and we will help support health insurance as needed. A child care subsidy can be available for qualified candidates. Unemployment coverage is not included. Many members may qualify for SNAP benefits to help with food expenses. As an AmeriCorps member, you may qualify for WV Medicaid.
You are responsible for your own living arrangements and cost, although many members arrange to room together with other members. No resettlement or moving allowance is included. A few sites offer low-cost housing options. Former AmeriCorps members may be able to help you find housing. Word of mouth is the best way to find housing in rural WV.
Education Award
You will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,247.50 at the successful completion of your 900 hour term of service. Uncompleted terms do not receive educational award. The award can be used for most college tuition, technical or vocational education, or repayment of qualified student loans. Existing qualified student loans can be deferred during your AmeriCorps service with loan interest paid for the deferment period. Members 55 or older may choose to transfer their award to a child or grandchild.
WV Public Schools Tuition Waiver Program
NEW FOR 2022! Starting in the Fall of 2022, eligible AmeriCorps members who successfully complete a term of AmeriCorps service will receive a tuition waiver for the same amount higher education at a WV public schools. Click HERE for more information.

Cover letter & Resume
To apply to AFNHA AmeriCorps email us a cover letter telling a little bit about yourself and why you are interested in our program. This is your introduction and expression of interest to us. Attaching an updated resume is highly recommended, and will be expected by some supervisors. If you don’t have a resume, a complete portal application may be sufficient.
Application
Apply to us through the my.americorps portal application, in addition to your emailed cover letter and resume. If you have trouble with this, you can get started by sending us your cover letter & resume, and complete the AmeriCorps application later during the process. If you look like a feasible candidate, we will respond to you with more information, and a pre-interview form to fill out, which includes your chance to pick which positions interest you the most.
Interviews
We will do a general program interview with you, then follow up with individual interviews with sites who are considering you. Position offers may follow these interviews.
When to apply?
We accept applications any time, however May through August is our prime recruitment season for early September start date. Positions are filled on a rolling basis, so early application will give most choice of positions. If some positions are not filled by start date, recruitment for those will continue until filled.
