Mineral County has historic sites dating back to the Revolutionary War. The arrival of the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1842 turning Keyser (Mineral County seat) into a terminus for travel between Maryland and West Virginia.
US Route 50 crosses through Mineral County. Along this historic travel route are different sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including Travellers Rest. Fort Ashby tells the story of early settlement & the Revolutionary War in Western Virginia.
