Eight rivers have their headwaters in Pocahontas County: the Cherry, Cranberry, Elk, Gauley, Greenbrier, Tygart Valley, Williams rivers, and Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. Pocahontas County as effected by the heavy logging of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The creation of the Monongahela National Forest helped to reforest this area, among many others in our region. Cass Scenic Railroad State Park tells the story of logging and railroads and is a must see.
The Green Bank Observatory is open for tours and visitors and lies in a National Radio Quiet Zone. The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area protects a unique ecological area. Marlinton is the county seat, sitting in a valley between many travel routes.
